Character Reference Financial Aid Appeal

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in support of {Name} as they pursue an appeal of their financial aid award from your institution.

I have known {Name} as their {teacher/guidance counselor} since freshman year, and it has been my great pleasure to see their drive and dedication as they reach for their goals. {Name} aims to {altruistic career, etc.}.

Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, need-based financial aid of {amount} will not be enough to bridge the gap for tuition and room and board. During this past year, {Name} experienced {homelessness/natural disaster/family health crisis or death/extreme income drop/etc.}. As a result, their Expected Family Contribution is not representative of their circumstances.

I would like to urge your college to consider {Name} for additional need-based aid as well as merit awards. I can think of no student more deserving, and after years of talking about going to school at {College}, I can’t imagine the heartbreak they must be feeling right now.
